4’x3’ Carved Walnut

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?

"I found most of a black walnut tree partially submerged near the mouth of Walnut Creek on Eagle Mountain Lake. It was very solid so I harvested several limbs. The tree had a distinctive twist in the grain that caught my interest. I aspire to have movement expressed in my work and this would help. Whenever I can I follow the grain. The tip of the nose is the center of the limb and the base is the top of the trunk. The burnt piece on top of the mane is part of the original log. This piece evolved over time, working off and on for over two years. Carousel horses were influential thus the name, but photos I took of a calf roping horse at the stock show were my guide." - Raymond Huyge
